Hooray for frogs!

Filed under: science — by lanie @ 8:20 pm

A Vanderbilt study has found that peptides secreted by frogs may lead to topical treatments to prevent HIV transmission. “The peptides appear to selectively kill the virus, perhaps by inserting themselves into the HIV outer membrane envelope and creating ‘holes’ that cause the virus particle to fall apart.”

Studies into the mechanism of these peptides will undoubtedly result in being able to utilize synthetic compounds to achieve the same results.

I love science.

Note to self: Don’t apply to any schools in NJ

Filed under: current events, graduate school, science — by lanie @ 1:57 pm

Apparently a lab in NJ has somehow managed to lose a bunch of mice infected with the bubonic plague.

Anyhow, speaking of grad school, I’ve narrowed down my list to the following schools/programs:

University of Cincinnati, Chemistry
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, biochemistry
University of Arizona, BCP
Penn State, biochemistry
University of Virginia, BMBMG

Plus or minus a few shoe-in schools. My top choices right now are U of Arizona and U of Cincinnati, so if I get into either of those, I’ll be happy.

Return to the Pink Bubble

Yes, I’ve been back for about three weeks now, and I’m just getting around to updating my blog.

I’m finally living in Manson (which is supposed to be “the best” dorm on campus), but we’ve had about 7 fire alarms already. Two on consecutive nights, (0345 and 0550!). I really like having a single and all, but this is just silly.

I’m taking creative writing, latin american culture, advanced spectroscopy, and biochemistry I this semester. Things are going alright so far. I feel like the semester is flying by so quickly. Which should motivate me to finish my graduate school applications. But its not working. I’m slowly discovering that senioritis isn’t just a myth.

Anyhow, I have nothing interesting to share with the world at 9:11am, so my apologies.
